David and Lara Talk About Their Family’s Adoption Story:
In March 2010, David and Lara actually met on the internet and started getting to know one another. It didn’t take long to see the Lord’s hand leading them together. After a few visits across the country, they were engaged and madly in love. They were married in March 2011 and have been growing in love since then. Since they are older than most newlyweds, they wanted to start a family as soon as the Lord would allow. But their journey through infertility has been a painful road full of dashed hopes and disappointment. David and Lara have both independently had a heart for adoption before they met and knew they would pursue it at some point in their lives, as the Lord willed. But, it was always put on the back burner because they ached to have a baby of their own first. But, just as the Lord used other believers and a series of circumstances to guide them together, He has used these same tools to bring them to this new step. After so much emotional strain and grief over infertility they finally came to the agreement that they would find out more information about adoption. Lara began to get involved with Reece’s Rainbow as a prayer warrior. This organization invites others to donate to a grant for families that will adopt the listed children, who have special needs. Children with special needs or disabilities are often overlooked as adoptees. Lara has had experience growing up with these precious people, and was inspired by a family that fostered and adopted, abused and neglected and disabled children. And she loved working with children who had a variety of needs in the school district, and at a private school for children with autism. David had less experience with this and didn’t think it was the Lord’s will for them, so Lara just tried to submit and leave it in the Lord’s hands. All the while still praying and advocating to open the eyes of anyone who’d listen, about the blessing and joy of adopting a child with special needs.
One night they were sitting on the couch watching TV, while Lara scrolled through the newly listed children on Reece’s Rainbow website on her laptop, praying that the Lord would bring them to their families. David caught a glimpse of a radiant smile coming off the page, out of the corner of his eye. But, he didn’t say anything to Lara and later after she went to bed, he got on his desktop computer and looked to find that little girl with the glowing face. He found her and after reading her profile, he felt the Lord calling him to pursue adopting her and her little brother. He looked past her diagnosis to see a child, longing to be loved and in need of care.
